The Roving Artists
January 11th to February 19th, 2007

The Roving Artists are a diverse group of 18 artists. Currently they meet each week at Cardinal Hall in Gibsons, B.C. ten months of the year. During the two summer months they meet at various picturesque locations enjoying en plein air painting, weather permitting. The group has been meeting for over fifteen years at various venues and decided in 2005 to change their name to The Roving Artists to reflect their somewhat nomadic nature.

Each member of the group pursues his or her own style and subject matter, often exploring and experimenting with new techniques. The media they employ include oil, acrylics, watercolours, pastels and inks. The subject matter is equally diverse including landscapes, seascapes, still life, portraits and on a whimsical note, cartoons. The major impetus guiding the artists is the freedom of approach and the inspiration of confreres that has attracted this group of artists to meet on a regular basis.

To give those who wish an opportunity to hone their skills in figure drawing, members take turns modeling one week and on alternate weeks artists may present their work for critique by fellow artists. At all times artists may be approached for technical information or assistance with execution and in this way act as a support group for each other. A number of the artists have had formal training, many have undertaken workshops with accomplished artists and several have used their artistic skills professionally.

There is no instruction or set program although occasional workshops have been undertaken. The Roving Artists have maintained a close affinity with the Gibsons School of the Arts over the years. Once each year, as with most groups of artists, they hold a show and sale of their work. Occasionally they will present a sample of their work at locally sponsored commercial establishments and have had their work accepted at galleries.

Elements
February 22nd to April 2nd, 2007

A natural amalgam of pottery, masks and wood.
Earth, Air, Fire and Water. In ancient Greek philosophy, physical substances and spiritual essences linking humankind to nature, the heavens, and the divine...

CHRIS ALLAN of Sechelt combined her environmental concerns with a love of literature and philosophy to inspire her art, including striking decoupage techniques. "Images in my earlier work were inspired and encouraged by the West Coast Nuu-Chah-Nulth of Ahousat, BC, where I lived for two years."

RAY & BEV NIEBERGALL have studied Ceramic Arts at the University of Alberta and the Banff School of Fine Arts, as well as participating in Travelling Art Circles. In 1991, they moved to South America, and worked with Los Mapuches, First Nations people of Patagonia for 8 years. In 2003, they built their Pottery Studio in Roberts Creek. "Touching clay brings us back to our roots, back to our humanity and re-connects us to our Creative Spirit."

CARLIE SANFORD of Roberts Creek is inspired by her environment, Art Nouveau and Surrealism. She is a graduate of the Kootenay School of the Arts, as is TIMOTHY NIEBERGALL, who has lived in Argentina, Toronto, and now lives in Roberts Creek. He hopes to teach and explore more collaborative works in "this wonderful medium."
